News Releases Zero the Hero visits CottonwoodZero The Hero made a surprise visit to kindergartners in Becky Scherbring’s class at Cottonwood Elementary School. The famous Zero comes to classrooms across the country on the 100th day of school to teach kids the concept of zero and how to count by 10's! Learn more.
 Students selected for highest honorFourteen Millard seniors have been invited to become U.S. Presidential Scholars, the nation's highest honor for high school students. Up to 141 students are chosen each year. From Millard North: Aubrey Beck, Jackson Gzehoviak, Patrick Luddy, Allen Qui, Emily Reiff, Aanya Sagheer, Carl Stokes, Erik Strottmann, Jeeva Venkataraman, Caitlin Wilhelm and Cole Wilhelmi. From Millard West: Joseph Beeson, Katherine Preston and Charles Schlaepfer.  Russell supports United WayStudents at Russell Middle School raised $1,636 for United Way, the most of all middle schools in Millard. Administrator Angelo Passarelli presented a trophy in recognition of the accomplishment to Julia Hall and Gino Nuzzolillo. The students led the successful campaign.  IB schools receive good newsThe International Baccalaureate Organization commended Aldrich Elementary School for its commitment and innovation in implementing the IB program. Millard North High School also received good news. A statistical bulletin showed that IB students in Millard North High School’s Class of 2011 achieved a higher grade than the world average score, and for the first time, the percentage of Millard North students achieving the highest grade equaled the world percentage.  Students achieve perfect ACT scorePeter Xu, a junior at Millard North High School, earned the top composite score of 36 on the ACT exam taken last fall. Only one-tenth of 1 percent of test-takers earn the top score each year. Two Millard seniors also achieved perfect scores: Katie Preston of Millard West and Cole Wilhelmi of Millard North.  Teachers earn national certificationFour teachers have earned national certification, the highest professional credential in the field of teaching. They bring the district’s total to 17. Learn more.  Student excels in national contestAndrew Johnson, a senior at Millard West High School, recently attained second-place in a national journalism competition sponsored by the National Scholastic Press Association. His submission in the category of editorial and opinion writing was selected among the 2011 Story of the Year Winners.  Student receives AP honorYan Zhang, a senior at Millard West High School, has been selected to receive the 2011 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. The honor is given to two students per state for earning the highest scores on the most AP exams.  Abbott students help Open Door MissionAbbott Elementary School students and staff collected 600 pounds of clothing, 41 turkeys and hams, and 460 pounds of food for the Open Door Mission. The PTO organized the event. See more.  Harvey Oaks helps kids in needThe Harvey Oaks Elementary School Community Builders Club collected over 150 pajamas for children in need. Teachers Morgan McArle and Katie Snyder organized the event, which was celebrated with a school-wide Pajama Day. See more.  Persuasive letter makes an impressionStudents in Matthew Noe’s fifth grade class at Cody Elementary School wrote persuasive letters to businesses. Employees at Lawlor's Custom Sportswear were so impressed with the letter written by Adam Anneberg that they designed Cody t-shirts for the entire class and Principal. Steven Ruzek from the store at 84th and J Street surprised students with the gift of shirts. See more.  Teacher wins national awardMatt Dykstra, physical education teacher at Ezra Millard Elementary School, is one of only 35 educators from across the country to receive the National Education Award for Teaching Excellence sponsored by the National Education Association and California Casualty. He is pictured with Susan Flynn, field marketing manager for California Casualty. She presented Matt with a check for $650 for his school. He also will be honored at a ceremony in Washington, DC in February.  Helping Project Wee Care!Black Elk Elementary School supported the Millard Business Association’s Project Wee Care to help Millard families in need during the holidays. Students and staff wrapped 455 gifts for 51 children in 16 families. Kari Scarborough, second grade teacher, and Michelle Kugler, parent volunteer, chaired the project for Black Elk. See more.  Millard supports United WayMillard staff and students raised $72,128 to support United Way. Harvey Oaks Elementary School, Beadle Middle School and Millard South High School won trophies for greatest staff participation. Rohwer Elementary School, Russell Middle School and Millard West High School earned the trophy for greatest student participation. See more.  Abbott students ring bellsFourth-graders from Abbott Elementary School got into the holiday spirit by ringing bells for the Salvation Army. See more.  Abbott student wins art contestMaliyah Rogers, third-grader at Abbott Elementary School, won the "No Tobacco Art Contest" sponsored by Methodist Hospital. Her class received a pizza party and a visit from the Millard North High School mascots. See more.  Montclair kids send books to MongoliaTeachers Sue Dunning and Kim Reid and their first-graders at Montclair Elementary School collected over 250 books for children in Mongolia. The books will be used in a new library started by a nephew of Liz Smith, the physical education teacher at Montclair. See more.
 Collecting cans for Omaha Food BankThe student council at Reeder Elementary School sponsored a canned food drive for the Omaha Food Bank. See more.  Patriots welcome new citizenMillard South High School 'Patriots" packed the auditorium to cheer fellow student Ilmihana "Hana" Kendic as she took the oath to become a U.S. citizen. Hana and her family fled Bosnia when she was four. She told the audience that they need to realize and not take for granted the many opportunities and freedoms we have in this country. See more. Abbott students salute veterans!Students at Abbott Elementary School wrote letters to veterans to thank them for their service to our country. Students watch teacher perform in operaStudents know Nicole Chapman as the music teacher at Holling Heights Elementary School, but they saw her transformed as Hansel in Opera Omaha's recent presentation of Hansel and Gretel. She wrote a grant to allow first through fifth graders to attend the opera.  Reeder Roadrunners go the extra mile!Students at Gretchen Reeder Elementary School raised $6,943 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation by running or walking a mile. Willowdale lends supportThe Student Council at Willowdale Elementary School sponsored a clothing and Halloween costume drive during the month of October for the Open Door Mission. Black Elk Elementary School choir performsThe Black Elk Bravos Choir, under the direction of Julia Jenkins, performed the National Anthem at the UNO Maverick hockey game at the Century Link Center. About 100 students participated. See more.  Dalmatians find fun at Disney!Dalmatians were loose at Disney Elementary School on Halloween! Cruella de Vil (aka Principal Bethany Magana) and her henchmen couldn't round up the dogs running the halls. Staff members always find a common theme and create costumes for the all-school parade. North Middle School student wins Millard Spelling BeeSpencer Sosalla-Bahr, eighth-grader at North Middle School, won the Millard School District Spelling Bee. Carli McCash, eighth-grader at Russell Middle School, took second place. Spencer will represent Millard at the Midwest Spelling Bee. See more.  Halloween brings spooky beauty contestTeachers at Abbott Elementary School competed in a "Disfunctional Beauty Pageant." Meet the contestants!  Gear up to graduate!Gear Up to Graduate Day at Central Middle School showed sixth-graders the importance of achieving academic success in middle school in order to graduate from high school. Students wrote a “Commitment to Graduate” letter. Students will read their letter as a reminder in the seventh and eighth grades and take it with them when they leave for high school. See more.
 BE DRUG-FREEThe Pathfinder Club at Neihardt Elementary School kicked off Red Ribbon Week by creating messages on fences. Students and staff also signed a red ribbon and tied the ribbons around the trees in front of the school. Counselor Jennifer Mangan and Librarian Linda Ward organized the activities. See more.  Top chef performs at high schoolsMillard high school students watched Executive Chef Mike Morris of Sodexo display his culinary skills at lunchtime during the week of Oct. 17. The chef, assisted by Millard’s food service workers, prepared Szechuan Chicken, rice, egg rolls and a fortune cookie. Over three days, Chef Mike and staff served over 1,200 orders of Szechuan Chicken!! See more.  Millard helps with Food Day CampaignOver 300 people visited Millard’s booth at the Food Day Campaign held during the farmers market in Aksarben on Oct. 23. Food Day is a nationwide event promoting healthy eating and sustainable agriculture. Volunteers from Sodexo and our food service program provided children's activities teaching healthy choices. The booth also promoted Millard’s Future Chefs Kids Culinary program and the local produce that is served in our schools. See more.  Volcanoes erupt at UpchurchMr. Mosser’s fourth-grade class at Upchurch Elementary School created volcanoes to the delight of first-graders watching the science project. Students used baking soda, dish soap and vinegar to launch eruptions after studying different types of landforms and the effects of erosion and deposition. Soap bubbles carrying the soil away represented erosion. Bubbles settling next to the volcano represented deposition.
 Give me five!Following a ‘caping’ ceremony at Wheeler Elementary School, Caballo celebrates with a high-five! The standard poodle just completed Domesti-Pups training and can now serve as one of Millard’s seven certified therapy dogs. Caballo belongs to Jonna Childers-Hansen, reading teacher at the school.  Fun geography lessonI-Go Van and Storage Company and United Van Lines are providing a fun lesson in geography to fourth-graders at Aldrich Elementary School. Students met “Driver Dave” who will send them postcards along his route to 10 cities. Students will calculate his mileage as they trace his route on a map.  See earth, wind, fire and water!Come to the Don Stroh Administration Center, located at 5606 S. 147 St., during September to see recycled trash transformed into beautiful art! Students at Beadle Middle School created four panels symbolizing the natural elements. Each class brainstormed to develop a theme. Earth is represented by computer packaging and shipping boxes. Wind is constructed from plastic bottles, forks and bubble wrap. Fire is built with cardboard boxes, tubes and paper towel rolls. Water is created out of phone books, paper, packaging paper and magazines. The result is amazing!  Black Elk kids are poets!Black Elk Elementary School has received the Poetic Achievement Award by having a larger number of entries and over fifty percent chosen for publication. Ms. Randels and Mrs. Pugh both had students whose work was published in the Creative Publishing Poetic Book.  Students perform at Millard Days ParadeMillard's award-winning music program was on display at the Millard Days Parade. Many schools sent band and orchestra students to perform.  Student honored for philanthropyGoldie Kelly, third grader at Willowdale Elementary School, has received a $1,000 scholarship toward college from the Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program in recognition of her philanthropy projects. Service to others is considered the most important asset of Millard’s 40 Developmental Assets program. Goldie is co-captain of her American Cancer Society Relay for Life team and has raised more than $7,000. In addition, she donated her hair to the Locks of Love program.
