Millard wins Governor's Award
Gov. Dave Heineman presented awards to the Millard, Cozad, Kearney and Sutherland school districts for their efforts to engage parents in their child's education. Each school district received $1,000, courtesy of All Lines Interlocal Cooperative Aggregate Pool (ALICAP) which sponsored the award. Millard was honored for implementing the 40 Developmental Assets program as a tool to help teachers and parents track the character development of each student. Pictured are ALICAP Administrator Megan Boldt, Board President Mike Pate, Governor Dave Heineman and Superintendent Keith Lutz.

Black Elk kids "Read Around the World"

Black Elk Elementary School students participated in a "Read Around the World" fundraiser providing $1,000 for Operation School Bell.  Students took pledges and logged a total of 105,908 minutes of reading at home – the equivalent of reading non-stop for 74 days!

Millard South students share 40 assets success
Students and staff from Millard South High School traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio to present a session at the national conference of Healthy Communities Healthy Youth. They explained how a student group was formed at Millard South to promote the 40 Developmental Assets program.  The student group is sponsored by Michele Stogdill and  Jill Prochaska. Pictured are the officers.

Holling Heights students honor veterans
The Veterans Day program, held at Holling Heights Elementary School, attracted over 30 veterans. Major Ted Hanger was the featured speaker. Pictured are the Cub Scouts who did the presentation of colors.

Food service workers help to stop hunger
Millard's food service staff raised $944 for the Omaha Food Bank.  The event is part of the STOP Hunger initiative, sponsored by Sodexo.

Cody kids pay tribute to veterans

Cody Elementary School students learned about the history of Veteran’s Day at an all-school assembly.  They also heard about the work of soldiers from Sgt. Clint Huey who serves in the Nebraska National Guard and is a parent of two students.  Fourth and fifth graders recited patriotic poetry and read essays.  The playing of taps and a moment of silence concluded the event.

Kiewit students honor veterans
Seventh-graders at Millard's Kiewit Middle School took time to remember that we have our freedoms because of the sacrifices made by veterans.  On Veteran's Day, students performed patriotic songs and tributes to honor their relatives and friends who have served in the military.  Pictured are Brendan Kanan and Kyle Gartner.  Kyle is a former Kiewit student and a friend of Brendan’s brother who is serving overseas.

IB seniors honored
The 36 seniors in Millard North High School's International Baccalaureate program were honored at a ceremony Sun., Oct. 25 at the Durham Museum.  The IB program provides challenging courses with an international focus. The seniors are seeking to earn an IB diploma and college credit by fulfilling the requirements of the program.

Pretty or scary: painted pumpkins are fun!

Students let their creativity show while painting pumpkins in Lauri Cork’s fourth-grade class at Ackerman Elementary School.  The activity was planned by her student-teacher Ben Obradovich.

Allias Thomson wins spelling bee
Allias Thomson, an eighth-grader from Central Middle School (pictured on the right), competed against a record number of contestants to win Millard’s annual spelling bee on Oct. 20. Lindsey Amen, a seventh-grader from Kiewit Middle (pictured on the left), came in second. The event, held at the Don Stroh Administration Center, attracted 58 students from Millard’s six middle schools. Each had qualified to compete by scoring 80 percent or higher on a written test. The competition began with the word “measure” and ran through six rounds and nearly 200 words to end on the winning word “granolith.” Allias Thomson will move on to the Midwest Spelling Bee in March. These local and regional competitions are the preliminary rounds for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
